You can put an end to the illegal meat trade and save animal lives!

A Four Paws International team hit the ground in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to investigate the dark secret that lies in the shadows of the Angkor temples—the cruel and horrific dog and cat meat trade. Just minutes away from this historic tourist destination, one can find shocking holding areas for dogs. It is here they wait before being trafficked to slaughterhouses across the country.

A few minutes trek down a small path, and the Four Paws team saw what they were looking for—rusty cage upon cage, all with 10-30 dogs crammed inside. Many of the dogs showed clear signs of injury, open wounds and skin infections. Dogs were stressed, barking, growling and attacking each other in the overcrowded cages.

Four Paws International is working all over Southeast Asia to save thousands of animals from the illegal meat trade, and to shut it down altogether. By rescuing dogs and cats, they give stolen animals a second chance at life and reduce the spread of disease from the meat markets. They reduce the stray population and offer loving homes to those they save. They also help educate local communities while learning from them where the need is, how they can help and what solutions can end the trade for good.

You can help save cats and dogs from this horrible fate. Your gift will increase the number of animals rescued, providing medical care (including vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, behavioral therapy, etc.), demolishing cages at slaughterhouses, flying dogs to the US and increasing local media attention on the meat trade. Give today!

Field Update

During the Siem Reap investigation described above, the team met Nanna, a small puppy who, every time they walked by her cage, would lay down on her side, stretch her small paw out through the bars, and give a classic puppy whine until she got attention. She would return the favor with a lot of licks and tail wags.

But soon, Nanna would be transported to a slaughterhouse. Though the Four Paws team had to leave to continue their investigation, as the day progressed, they couldn't help but think of the sweet puppy who reached out to them for help. They knew they had to return. After much negotiation, they secured her release, and Nanna made the journey back to Phnom Penh, where she received a full medical examination and treatment for her wounds, dehydration and parasites. Luckily, Nanna was quickly adopted. She no longer awaited being tortured, killed and eaten for dinner.
