Help a Maasai student in need by gifting them a mandatory school uniform.
The Maasai are a small ethnic group of people living in southern Kenya's famed Maasai Mara National Reserve. Maasai students living in this area are eager for education because it promises opportunities to make a living beyond traditional cattle herding. However, the structure of the Kenyan education system requires all students to wear uniforms when attending school. These uniforms are expensive and hard to come by for the families of rural Maasai students, and this small hurdle can be enough to keep children from being able to attend school.
The Anne K. Taylor Fund (AKTF) works with a Maasai women's cooperative to commission school uniforms for local students. These uniforms are given to primary and middle school students at one of AKTF's partner schools in Maasai Mara. Not only do these uniforms allow students to attend school, but they also lend the students an attitude of pride, seriousness and intentionality as they learn. In addition, as the children often walk 10 kilometers to and from school, the uniforms identify the children as they walk through the wilderness to their homes— a Maasai version of a Neighborhood Watch! For Maasai students, their access to a bright future starts with the uniform they wear. Empower schoolchildren with the gift of a uniform by donating today!
You can help. Just $21 provides a school uniform for a student in Kenya's Maasai Mara community school who otherwise cannot afford it.
Anne Kent Taylor founded the Anne K. Taylor Fund (AKTF) in 1999, to find both short and long-term solutions that involve the Maasai communities in conservation efforts to protect their heritage and their futures. AKTF fulfills its mission (in conjunction with local authorities) through focusing on anti-poaching, fortified livestock enclosures, and education projects.
