Every child deserves a bike. For such a small amount, you can help these American kids get up on two wheels and realize that dream.
Riding a bike is one of the great joys of childhood. Owning a bike is a rite of passage that gives children a sense of freedom and independence. They learn boundaries and responsibility with a bike. Many families cannot afford to give their child this opportunity because of financial restraints. Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K) wants every child to have this experience no matter their family circumstance or socio-economic background.
FB4K has given away over 25,000 bikes and helmets in just over six years. They collect, refurbish, and distribute used bikes to kids in need. They do this for the kids who would never get to ride a bike otherwise and for the moms and dads who dream of teaching their children to ride. They give kids a reason to exercise and improve their health while experiencing that piece of childhood joy that every kid deserves. FB4K works with over 150 social service nonprofits to distribute the bicycles to kids in need.
You can help. Just $25 provides a new helmet and bike to a child in need.
Report from the Field
Donors like you have helped collect 8,000 bikes and give away 6,500 bikes to children in this past year. One of those recipients was Bella (name changed to protect identity). Bella came to Freek Bikez 4 Kidz through Head Start, one of the partner organizations. Because Bella received a bike, it shifted her whole family's perception of activity, freedom, and fun. Her grandmother, who could not otherwise provide a bike, was able to see the joy on Bella's face because of the bike. Bella rides her bike at least 5 days each week. She rides to her friend's house, to the park, and to school. Bella is more alert at school. She is happier and healthier. Her life has been changed.
With an average cost of $30 to put a child on a bike, every dollar contributed makes a significant impact to help us achieve our mission. GreaterGood donors helped put staff infrastructure in place to manage and coordinate logistics involved in managing 2,000+ volunteers working 15,000+ hours. In 2016, Free Bikes 4 Kids collected, cleaned and refurbished over 5,000 bikes - and thousands of Twin Cities youth will experience the joy of riding a bike. Some of them have shown their gratitude in the letters below.
Free Bikes 4 Kidz is a non-profit organization geared toward helping all kids ride into a happier, healthier childhood by providing bikes to those most in need. The public donates gently used bikes, we organize thousands of volunteers to clean and refurbish them, and then we give them away to kids in need.
