Set your sights on new horizons with this simply beautiful stretch beaded bracelet made by women in Uganda and Kenya. Handmade by women in Uganda from recycled magazines -- individually hand-rolled and coated with a shiny lacquer to make them water-resistant and durable -- the beads are then fairly traded to Kenya for hand-stringing...transforming them into beautifully uncommon jewelry. All the workers are paid fair, livable wages -- about five times higher than the national average in Kenya.
- Recycled magazines, glass, & metal
- Stretches up to 2.5" diameter (6.4 cm)
- Handmade in and fairly traded from Kenya
Due to the recycled nature of this product, colors will vary. Please allow us to choose for you.
Acacia Creations has been making eco-friendly jewelry, gifts, and home accents at their fair-trade studio in Kenya since 2007. Since then, the tangible benefits of fair-trade are visible in the original group of artists who now have money in savings, have sent their children to school, and are moving into the middle class, one handmade item at a time.
Virginia, a single mother and star of the jewelry-making team, joined Acacia Creations in 2009. Before Acacia, she taught herself to make jewelry and sold her pieces at Nairobi's markets until post-election violence drove the tourists away. She came to work for Acacia, and was able to support her family, put her daughter Rachael through school, and secure a loan to move into a new home, leaving her abusive partner. Rachael is now at the top of her class, and Virginia trains many of the newer jewelry makers.
The mission of Acacia Creations has always been to improve lives in a long-lasting and sustainable way, creating jobs, providing training, and giving back to communities through education and healthcare initiatives. They work directly with hundreds of craftspeople in Nairobi, Kenya and across East Africa to improve their skills and product designs.
I like this bracelet. It goes with many different things. I like that it is stretchable. This is the 2nd one of this type I have gotten.
I love this bracelet. It's my style and it feels good knowing that it has helped the world by using some recyclable materials and supporting a good cause.
Very pretty, I believe my friends, who are great conservationists and who strongly believe in women's rights, will love them!
